I spoke with Dave about posting an event that I think many of you may find interesting. Here in Western Maryland we have an event that we have resurrected that was once a big part of motorsports in Maryland. The Breakneck Hillclimb that took place many years ago was attended by some of the biggest names in motorsports at the time and it has be revived as the Polish Mountain Hillclimb. This is a two day event that takes place in August on a public road that was once the main artery linking the metropolitan area to the west. It's an SCCA /Pennsylvania Hillclimb Association sponsored event is one of the best bang fo the buck hillclimbs you can participate in because we are able to close not only the timed portion of the course but also a separate return road. This allows constant timed runs and we don't have to shut the course down to allow for the cars to return. Would love to see some more Porsches attend. You can get all the details and a video of a N/A 944 here http://www.nationalroadrally.com/ and and my video here http://www.vimeo.com/6042327 . If you have any specific questions let me know. If you have never participated in a hillclimb, you are missing an exciting experience.

Thanks for the posting Steve. I spent many years hillclimbing in Pa. and its very exciting. Racing full out on a public road is very different then close circuit racing. A real blast.

When is the event Steve? What would we need to do to enter? Cost?

Scheduled for August 6,7, & 8 with our 2 day autocross at the Cumberland Airport the following weekend. Many folks come and make a week of it. I believe the fees are $140 advance and $150 walk up.

All that is needed to enter is an SCCA level 4 time trial prepped car. All of our race cars are actually over prepped with cages, fire systems, window nets, etc. Need to pay the Entry fee and SCCA time trial license. For those of us doing the Nationals we would be good. SCCA offers a weekend pass for $15 (last year's price) for a novice permit.

People ask me what it's like. I tell them it's like running from the cops and you know there is nobody coming the other way. Very exciting. Between the gaurdrails, trees, rock walls, etc it tests your abilities to focus on the asphalt and learn the course. Maxing out 3rd gear at over 100mph and knowing that there is a 90 degree turn somewhere beyond your vision hidden behind the trees is coming up fast really keeps you on your toes! The first year I had the turbo there a friend in a 911 was posting similar times and we were swapping back and forth the lead changes. I'd drop a few seconds, he'd drop a few. On Sunday about 2:00 I did a "banzai run" that in my mind was all the car was capable of doing with relaition to grip and acceleration and all I could do with the talent I had as a driver. When I got to the top of the hill I realized there was so much adrenaline circulating that my legs were shaking and I couldn't hold down the clutch pedal! It's one thing that I think every car guy should try at least once. Come on guys, put it in your schedule and scratch one off the bucket list.
