Join 944 Cup at Monticello Motor Club, October 10-12, 2014

PCA racer Ari Straus invites 944 Cup to one of the world’s few private motor clubs! Come challenge Monticello’s 3.6-mile full-course, and be one of only 125 PCA racers with the opportunity do so. “Technical, yet with long straights,” the Boxster pilot and MMC President/CEO explains, “this course is perfect for 944 Cup.”
Read on for some driving tips from founding member, Ron Tietjen:

Tricks of the Track: Advice for Monticello Newcomers
by Patti Mascone

Ron and Mary Tietjen have been active on the racetrack since 1992, often seen at the wheel of some smartly outfitted 944 Turbos. With their children, Porsche Club track events have been a family affair, especially at venues within reach of their Connecticut home. However, the Tietjens found their track schedule often conflicted with other life events, which made the couple think, “Why not drive when we want to drive?” The answer to that question was simple—Join the Monticello Motor Club (MMC) as founding members.

Since Ron’s first visit around MMC—in a Land Rover, which was necessary at the time—he has seen every stage of the track’s development. Who better to provide 944 Cup racers some insight on driving the Monticello circuit when Nationals roll around! In tackling the layout, Ron’s best advice is “to take a little time to learn the track.” There are a couple of blind turns, some with multiple lines, and some are “counter-intuitive due to elevation changes and camber.” Even though Ron has driven the circuit about 20 times (and raced there), he still learns something on every visit. Only after the Monticello rookie knows the course, Ron says, should the focus shift to attempting passes. With the caution “don’t make it three wide,” the first-time visitor must be patient, he states.

For those who may have access to games or videos of professional tracks, you may find some glimpses of those tracks at Monticello. For example, Ron points out, Turn 1 is from Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, while a later section mimics Laguna Seca. Fortunately, there is only one line to learn, as Monticello’s rain and dry lines are the same.

Finally, Ron sums it up by saying, “Don’t try and win the race on the first day.”

By rule, to qualify for regional titles and trophies, a driver must display a 944 Cup windshield banner and must race in half or more of the regional races, which includes DNF's and DNS's. DQ's do not count. Trophies and prizes will be presented at Nationals.

To win National titles and trophies, a driver must display a 944 Cup windshield banner and must participate in two (2) regional events prior to Nationals. Any driver who has paid the entry fee for a regional race is considered to have participated regardless if they have or have not started a race that weekend.

To win drawing prizes at Nationals at the annual awards banquet, a driver must be entered at Nationals, a driver's car must display a 944 Cup windshield banner and be present at the awards ceremony. Every driver meeting these qualifications will win at least one prize.

944 Cup drivers, Millers Oils has added more product to be given away at Monticello.

In addition to over $500 of product Millers Oils gives away at 944 Cup races throughout the season valued at over $500, they will provide $250 of motor and gear oil for the year end @ Nationals.

Like most of the prizes for the series at Nationals , a drawing will be held Saturday evening happy hour at the club house for the Millers Oils prizes. All that is needed to be eligible for the drawing is to enter any of the SP 1,2 or 3 classes, and display Cup sponsor decals and a 944 Cup windshield banner, all of which will be available at the track.

I have a few details to share regarding the inaugural race offered at Monticello Motor Club (MMC).

The Race at Monticello Motor Club will be an "all inclusive MMC experience" with one fee for driver and another for each attendee. Pricing for the club race will be as follows:
• $650/driver – includes practice on Friday, 4 sprint races (2 Sat, 2 Sun) and food/drink for the entire weekend
• $100/non-driver – includes crew/family/public to cover the cost of food/drink for the entire weekend

Food/drink will consist of a hot breakfast offered all 3 days (Fri/Sat/Sun), includes a gourmet lunch all 3 days provide by the MMC chef, and hors d’oeuvres each evening (Fri/Sat) that also includes beer and wine after the track goes cold.

This pricing model serves to enable each and every person attending the event to feel completely welcome as part of the overall MMC club experience, to be able to join in each and every aspect of what MMC has to offer, and that was very important to the venue’s club race organizers.

And as I understand, tires must be ordered at least 10 calendar days prior to the event for PT to have for you at the track.

When registration opens on August 25th, there will only be about 100 slots available for all racing classes.

Thats not a lot so it will fill fast. So register promptly.

At this point, this is a one time opportunity to race Monticello without paying $100,000 to become a member. May not happen again next year. Dont miss the chance.
