Mid Season Review: Rules of the Road for 944 Cup Racing

The following rules apply to all 944 Cup events (except for those events run in conjunction with PCA for which PCA rules apply).

a) The 944 Cup rules for passing are as follows. The 944 Cup rules for passing requires that once a pass is initiated by an overtaking 944, the overtaking 944 has a right to be there, and that the leading 944 must leave the overtaking 944 racing room on the paved surface. The act of passing is initiated when the overtaking car’s front bumper overlaps with the lead car’s rear bumper. Once this overlap occurs, the overtaking 944 has a right to be there but has but accepts the responsibility for making a safe pass.

A pass must be made on the paved surface of the track. The penalty for passing with wheels off the track will be one position in the race results. If the overtaking car has overlap on the car being passed and is then forced off track, no penalty will be applied to the overtaking car.

A pass is not completed until the overtaking car’s rear bumper is clear of the car’s front bumper that is being passed. This rule of passing is not permission to dive bomb a fellow racer in a late effort to make the pass or claim a pass had begun.

b) Defensive driving is permitted, blocking is not. A driver is permitted to change lanes or the line once when employing a defensive position. More then one maneuver to prevent a pass is considered blocking. The penalty for blocking will result in the driver being penalized one position in the race results.

c) Whenever a driver spins or leaves the racing surface the driver must proceed in a safe and responsible manner. If off the track, the driver must reenter the track only as traffic allows. This to be done safely and without the need for oncoming cars to avoid the car coming back on track. If you're in a spin, put "two feet in." Apply pressure to both brake and clutch in a spin which will help slow down the spin and make the car move in a consistent manner.

d) All metal to metal racing incidents must be immediately reported to a Cup official.
Based on the data available, a determination as to which driver(s) is at fault for the
incident and any sanctions to be levied against the driver(s) will be made by Cup officials. Any driver involved in car-to-car conduct must meet with the Steward before any subsequent sessions or the driver shall be presumed to be at fault.

Minor incidents involving negligible damage (such as paint scrapes or tire marks). It is inevitable that
incidental contact will take place. A driver may be found at fault however if the official determines the
incident to be minor, no sanctions will be levied. Actionable incidents involving significant damage. Generally, any damage beyond that which is negligible will be considered an actionable incident.

In car video cameras are not required by the series but are strongly encouraged to assist in fair determinations in assigning fault.

Thank you for complying with these rules and making the series a better place to race.

Yes. And, the rules were also included in the specific Supplemental rules issued to each registered driver with each non PCA 944 Cup race and the 944 Cup rules at http://www.44cup.com/official/944CupRules-2012.pdf .

I repeated some of the more critical rules at the drivers meeting as too often drivers neglect to read the Supplemental rules prior to arriving at the track.

I am still reviewing a couple racing incidents involving contact from the last race at NJMP. The final resolution of these incidents has been hampered by a lack of video footage and the drivers disagreeing on their accounts of the details of the incidents and fault. The rulings on these incidents will not effect the results of last weeks races.

I encourage all drivers to use in car cams to record track sessions to allow for the best possible decisions by officials.
