One concern we have with Daytona as site of 944 Cup Nationals is the top end advantage the 2.7 L cars have there over the 2.5 cars in sp2. At the last 944 Cup Nationals in 2013, 4 of 4 top cars were 2.7. Over the course of a season at various tracks, the weight differences between the 2 motors evens the results out. But at a one race runoff, that's not the case. Might need to provide for a performance allowance for 2016 Nationals Championship race to level the playing field for this one race.

1 30 RICHARD MITCH SP2 14 34:43.090 1 Lap 2:18.241 7 SILVER P 89 944 MG
2 50 BEASLEY FRED SP2 14 34:47.146 1 Lap 2:18.380 2 GOLD P 89 944 FLC
3 17 NORTHAM NORT SP2 14 34:57.182 1 Lap 2:18.933 6 GREEN P 88 924 S FLC
4 3 RANDOLPH STEVE SP2 14 34:57.586 1 Lap 2:19.543 4 WHITE/BLACK P 88 944 POT

5 78 SMITH RANDY SP2 14 34:58.224 1 Lap 2:18.973 6 WHITE/BLUE P 87 944 UPC
6 116 PREVOST MICHEL SP2 14 35:33.788 1 Lap 2:21.562 13 BLUE P 84 944 REN
7 05 RODENROTH DAVID SP2 13 33:15.005 2 Laps 2:20.758 5 WHITE P 88 944 FCR

IIRC the top three guys all called Daytona their home track and ran 16" wheels. I ran 16's as well. I think Randy didn't bring any 16's. Nevertheless, he ran a better fast lap than I on 15's. I think the top speed gearing of 16's pays off over the course of an entire race.

I do not profess to know the wheel size of every car that ran Nationals at Daytona, but I believe it reasonable to think that some of the 2.5 cars were equipped with 16's.

When the 944 Cup first ran Daytona, before Nationals, I was running a 2.7L motor and I distinctly remember passing 2.5 cars that had passed me coming out of the bus stop, and before we got off the banking to the front straight I was driving past them at a good clip. That never happen to me in that car anywhere else. At the time I attributed it to the ability to punch thru the air better once we got to 100 mph.

I am not confident that taking a few lbs out of the 2.5 cars will make up any difference, but I think the results from 2013 suggest it is worth a try so that the 2.5 cars feel they have a shot at a win or a podium

I agree with that statement Dave..... my read, it's all motor and aero and the 2.5 (legal 2.5s) don't have it IMHO.

Weight does matter, just not sure how much it takes to make the right difference over the course of the entire circuit. We will have a chance to study it some on saturday at Daytona with the current minimum weights. Just takes testing to figure it out. Batter chance of getting it right if we ever go back to Daytona again for a National.
