Greg and Dave, I believe Eric Ruppert's car was built to SCCA spec when he won the championship. He competed with several outstanding cars and drivers that year including Joe Hrymac's unbeatable Rothman's from two years later. Probably the biggest obstacle is the spring type requirement. Running torsion bars in the rear makes the ride hieght and corner balancing significantly more difficult. I also believe that torsion bars just plain don't resond as well as coil springs. Rim diameter is a close second, but many successful cars have run on 225s. Dave has alowed for 16's when I think ITS would be 15x7. Eric ran 15s as well. I know the move has been to wider...9s with 10"tires and those cars are quick! Maybe we could all save a little money with a spec tire, but that's a whole 'nother can o' worms!! The smaller wheel diameter can save you the trouble of changing your drive ratio, too.
With these two obvious disadvantages, I also think the SCCA cars could use a weight reduction. Thanks for the consideration. Tom

Ruperts car was an 83 car with a 2.7l engine....not a legal configuration for ITS. That engine would have only been available in an 89 car and is on its own line in the GCR. Installing it in the 83 allowed Eric to ballast the car up to weight, gaining him an advantage over someone with an 89 chassis. I would like to suggest that for next year the ITS cars be allowed either -25lb of weight or 5 more HP than the PCA/Cup prepared cars to make a start at getting some parity and making the less expensive ITS car a realistic option for Cup racers. I'll trade 5 more HP for adding 25lbs any day, since I have to add 150lbs (2600 to 2750) to run Potentially 6 more HP (144 to 150) in my 2.7L PCA prep car.
I am building an SCCA prep car for a friends son. Its an 88 2.5 liter and we'd welcome a small weight reduction.
