Watkins Glen Offers Super-Sized Competition
by Patti Mascone

A powerful nor’easter hit Watkins Glen, but it had nothing to do with the weather, thank goodness. On a perfect May weekend (which is never guaranteed in the Finger Lakes), PCA and 944 Cup came together for some super-sized racing. While the number of entrants fighting for points at this North/Canada event surpassed 50 for the second year in the row, the side-by-side racing largely stayed off the Armco, during two sprints and an Enduro.

The SP1 pilots, who run under the SP2 banner, made a strong showing among the NA 944s, led by Henry Hoeh and his knack for driving this course on trusty Toyo tires. On the heels of strong sprint finishes at Lime Rock, the Long Islander showed staying power, with a solid seventh in the enduro, while other Cup contenders faltered in the longer race. Hoeh’s 103 points also puts him in a tie for seventh in season points.

Driving a bright-green 944 that belies its 1984 origin, Allen Cohen added to his total of race podiums. After three visits to those steps, Cohen currently leads the 944 Cup North rankings, with 157 points on the board. Canada natives descended on the grid at 17 strong, as Randy Smith jumped straight into 2014 contention with two wins and a third.

Daniel Martinson’s first visit to the 3.4-mile track put him atop the Super Cup podium for Watkins Glen sweep, vaulting him to third in North points. Close contenders who were unable to make it to the Super Cup grid for Sunday’s extended outing included Michal Stach and Rob Branthover.

Because enduros are coming up at VIR and NJMP for the North—and Mosport and Mid-Ohio for Canada—regional championships may well hinge on a driver’s success at the extended distances. But you have to make it there first, with a reliable steed and no weekend-ending fender-benders.

And that includes passing checks, coming at any time, by the PCA scrutineers, which have been for safety equipment and weight, plus a few random checks with the scrute’s “black box.” These checks can take time from car preparation at the track, even if every driver and car are in total conformity with the rules. So competitors should be fully versed in their compliance before getting in line.
