You Can’t Take the Mosport Out of 944 Cup:
by Patti Mascone

The track in Bowmanville, Ontario, has been renamed after one of the country’s tire companies, but to the racers who run there, it’s all about motor sport or “Mosport.” “Many people continue to refer to the track with that name,” admits driver Bill Johnson, who traveled there from Connecticut. Change should come hard at a 50-year-old track whose features include dramatic elevation changes, thrilling blind apexes, and high-speed corners that make passes daring. They don’t make racetracks like this anymore.

Investments by new owners, including Ron Fellows, in a partnership with Canadian Tire, have resulted in substantial improvements in safety, driver, and spectator amenities, while the layout remains as intended. “Although the PCA entries were a bit on the low side, the quality of the racing was of the very highest standard,” Johnson relates. “The 944 SP cars were well represented with 17 and 14 entries, respectively in the two sprint races.”

Proud dad Ernie Jakubowski describes how daughter Margaret put herself into contention right out of the gate. You can almost hear the excitement in his description of Sprint 1:

“Margaret qualified fifth, [and] raced with leaders. At one point she came out of turn 1 door handle to door handle, raced to turn 2, in which she was on the outside. [She] proceeded to stick it out there and passed the other racer at the bottom of turn 2.”

Margaret Jakubowski finished third behind winner Randy Smith, then moved up a spot in the double bill’s second act, as Smith’s 944 suffered from a broken ball joint early in that outing. Yet there was a tougher contest to come this year—90-minutes of racing—with points counting towards the Canada championship.

After frantic front-end repairs on his car were made, Smith took the enduro grid on Sunday with an alignment the 2013 champion (and 2014 frontrunner) describes as “off.” By the three-quarters mark, M. Jakubowski had jumped ahead of the pack by 30 seconds until she was beset with a corded tire, and Smith closed the gap. The two nursed their cars home in the weekend finale, with Smith first and M. Jakubowski second.

With all these Mosport fans, grinning ear to ear, it remains puzzling why this PCA event has trouble drawing grids. But 944 Cup racers (and Canadians) know where the best combination of weather and great racing happens. “I would recommend a trip to Canada in 2015 to anyone who enjoys racing on great road courses. It has always been a well-organized event,” explains Johnson.

While Johnson went from fourth to second place in the standings. Margaret Jakubowski went from 11th to third, putting her in contention to become the series’ first female champion. “Anyone in the top three can take the 2014 Canada championship,” says 944 Cup National Director Dave Derecola.
